Hello neighbors!
Introduction to solarpunk dc
I’m Lavala Harris, a clean tech photographer based in Washington D.C. with a passion for capturing and sharing the stories of innovation and sustainability. By following along solarpunk dc, you’ll learn about the cities and local heroes championing a future centered on sustainability, intertwining technological progress and conservation. Cities are home to more than half of the global population and are responsible for 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, putting them at the heart of the climate change challenge. solarpunk dc aims to showcase urban sustainability, with a special focus on Washington, DC-area and a nod to strides made by fellow densely-populated metropolitan areas around the country and the world.
My journey started in war-torn Liberia, one of the poorest countries in the world. My childhood was defined by a tight-knit community, closeness to our food sources and nature, and overall, abundance - despite not having many material things.
Since moving to the United States in 2000, I have looked for remnants of my upbringing in my surroundings here in the country’s capital. Embracing my creativity through photography and videography has been one of the most intrinsic ways I’ve stayed connected to my roots. I’ve witnessed some of the most disastrous impacts of overconsumption, climate change, pollution, and societal disinterest behind the lens. But along the way, I’ve also witnessed some of the most interest stories on innovation, ingenuity, and community organization. My passion for technology, mobility, and the circular economy has led me to work with sustainable brands in these sectors and amplify their progress in combatting climate change and pollution.
As I continue my journey in sustainability storytelling, I’ve found fostering connections and feeding curiosity is essential. I serve as the Head of Community at Climate DC, where we focus on building a climate tech ecosystem in DC with monthly gatherings for the community to share ideas, network, and help those looking to transition into the climate space. Feel free to follow our community below.

Gen X? Gen Z? No, Gen Us
I believe one of the most critical gaps we must bridge as a society in order to tackle our biggest challenges, including sustainability, is the generational divide. I co-host the podcast “Generation Us,” where a young baby boomer and a progressive millennial (me) seek common ground through the prism of our generational differences. We get together for this audio/visual podcast on a semi-monthly basis and bring guests that offer expertise and nuanced perspectives to the pressing social questions around culture, technology, climate change, politics, race, and more.
Purpose of Solarpunk dc
I’m excited to launch this newsletter to share my passion for capturing the inspiring stories of climate action and progress. Through my lens, voice and writing, I aim to showcase how cities are collectively addressing the urgent challenge of climate change in the mobility and circular economy spaces. I will also be sharing sustainable living tips, clean tech innovation, international climate news, my favorite podcasts, policy and advocacy developments, and eco-friendly events and workshops in the DC area.

This is absolutely awesome!! … I’m not well versed on all the issues related to climate change, but I know it’s real and we need to make changes now! Having a resource like this to educate me and increase my knowledge is invaluable. I can’t wait to participate and share this with others!
